FAQ

Do I need any prior experience to start BJJ with you?

No, you don't need any prior knowledge. BJJ is designed for beginners here as well. In our beginner classes, you'll learn the basic techniques and concepts.

What equipment do I need for BJJ?

For gi training, you need a BJJ uniform. However, you can participate in the first few weeks in regular sportswear until you decide whether BJJ is right for you. If you already have a judo uniform, you can also use that for the first few weeks.

For no-gi/grappling training, regular workout clothes are sufficient to start. Make sure you arrive at training in clean workout clothes that are neither too loose nor too tight to allow for optimal freedom of movement. Wash your workout clothes immediately after training.

To avoid walking barefoot in the changing rooms, sanitary facilities and outside the mat area (for hygiene reasons), you should bring flip-flops.

Are there differences between BJJ uniforms? What is the significance of the colors?

There are differences between BJJ uniforms, particularly regarding fabric thickness and construction. Fabric thickness is measured in GSM (grams per square meter), with a lower number indicating a thinner and lighter uniform. The choice between a thicker or thinner uniform is largely a matter of personal preference. Thicker uniforms are more robust and heavier to grip, but they are also warmer and can result in a weight disadvantage during competitions.

BJJ uniforms are available from various retailers. Our experience shows that from around €80-€90 upwards, there are no significant differences in quality. On the websites of retailers/manufacturers, you will often find size charts in A0 to A6, instead of the usual clothing sizes. Use these measurements as a guide when choosing your uniform. Some manufacturers also offer in-between sizes such as A1L or A1S.

With us, you can wear the suit in the color you like. However, a white suit is always a good choice.

Since the suit should be washed after every training session, you will need several suits sooner or later. Don't forget to wash your belt regularly as well, since it can harbor bacteria and germs. Follow the manufacturer's washing instructions and avoid using a dryer to prevent the suit from shrinking.

What else is important to know?

It is extremely important that you trim your fingernails and toenails short before participating in BJJ training at our gym. Long nails can cause injuries to yourself and your training partners. It is advisable to trim your nails regularly to avoid potential scratches or other injuries. Please ensure your nails are always clean and well-groomed to maintain good hygiene practices at our gym.
